I figure I'm a nobody, and no one cares what I think. If I speak up, I might even get mocked. But the current climate has left me disheartened, as both an author and a reader. If I stay silent, will readers think I might secretly insult them too, and give up on stories about strong women? Maybe I'm overthinking it. Either way, I feel I should make my position clear. It can't hurt. 1. This is a romance novel. BL is not allowed. That said, while reviewing my work recently, I noticed something interesting: I haven't had two male characters interact alone in any of my stories. When they talk, they're either speaking to a female character or talking about women. I didn't deliberately set things up that way, but it happened naturally. Maybe that's a feature of female-centered storytelling, a bit like a gender-swapped version of the Bechdel test. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out on its own. 2. I promise I will never betray my readers. A book's vitality comes from both author and reader. An author's expression, and readers' engagement, feedback, and appreciation, together make a work; neither can do without the other.
