Younger, devoted, foolish top x cool, resourceful bottom
Hear me out, good sir. In the Chengyun era, the emperor was incompetent and the eunuch faction ran rampant. In the capital, a prominent family named Zhang was implicated by corrupt officials and executed to the last. The young master Zhang Shi escaped death with his younger sister, enduring countless hardships on their way to Gusu.
Zhang Shi scraped by in Suzhou until he finally raised his troublesome little sister and earned a little money. A clever strategist with an old friend to back him up, he finally fulfilled his lifelong wish: breaking into the imperial prison to rescue his former teacher. Little did he know that after sneaking into the prison, the very next day he'd also happen to pick up a big, clueless hunk.
The clueless guy followed him home. He might have been a bit dim, but he was sweet, and soon blushed and resolved to marry Zhang Shi.
Clueless guy, eyes sparkling: "My lord, I'm in love with you."
Zhang Shi, mouth twitching: "You're eight feet tall, built like a mountain, and have a backside like iron. I'm not into that sort of thing..."
The clueless guy was devoted to the core. The two of them played cat and mouse, until Zhang Shi was so exasperated that he gave in halfway. With more important things to do, Zhang Shi plotted to avenge his family's murder, outwitted the eunuch faction, and rallied the rebel army. He was so busy he could barely keep up, when one day the clueless guy came back with an army at his heels, insisting that Zhang Shi marry him.
Clad in black iron armor, the clueless guy reined in his horse with dashing flair and a smile, then tossed a flower branch into Zhang Shi's hands.
"When are you coming with me?"
Zhang Shi: ... So this kid has two sides to him!
And so the villainous couple began endlessly scheming against each other. Sweethearts by night, deadly enemies by day, neither one holding back from striking where it hurt.
Zhang Shi: "What happened to our happily ever after?!"
