Overview:
The book is divided into three major chapters, telling of the many adventures and challenges faced by the detectives and explorers Yue Yang and Fang Jie as they carry out their missions.
The first chapter follows a gathering at a villa, where everyone has come for a different reason: to protect a national treasure, preserve an inherited throne, uncover the secrets hidden in a prince's manuscript, or complete a mysterious "deal." Among them are a British envoy, a financial tycoon, a police inspector, a high-ranking official from the Republic of China, a former Qing prince and marquis, a French agent, Americans, a beautiful woman, and the dark forces of Shanghai. The protagonist, Yue Yang, navigates their tangled web of truth and deception as they search together for a deeply buried secret.
The second chapter tells the tragic story of A Xia and his younger sister, A Xiang. Fang Jie is A Xia, and Ru Shui is A Xiang. Their mother turns out to be Juhua, a Japanese spy. In the end, the wondrous woman kills the alluring woman, though they were actually mother and daughter, bound by blood. Was it an old grudge, born from being heartlessly abandoned as children? An old hatred, for killing the skillful healer who had treated her so kindly? Or a new feud, because their genes had actually mutated?
The third chapter tells how, with Yue Yang's help, Fang Jie recovers from his mental and physical ailments. The two then head to the Jinshan Islands to investigate eerie legends. They survive a sudden storm in Hangzhou Bay, a siege by man-eating crabs, and a duel with a mutated mountain demon. At last, they destroy the Japanese secret laboratory on Turtle Island, where viruses and genes are being developed.
The story's events are intricately connected. Chapters Two and Three take place before Chapter One, with further flashbacks woven throughout. The tale revolves around exploration, uncovering secrets, and confronting danger, showcasing the protagonists' courage and wisdom in the face of the unknown.
