Before the founding of the country, the countryside had only just emerged from ignorance. Electric lights were not yet widespread, and even candles were a luxury. Before sunrise and after sunset, the world outside turned into an unknown darkness. Farther beyond, the wilderness of five thousand years ago returned.
In places where human beings dared not tread, imagination could roam free, bringing back tales of ghosts and gods from between the Milky Way and the underworld. Old and young alike passed them down by word of mouth, telling them in vivid detail.
To the elderly, ghosts and gods were not vague, ethereal legends. They were neighbors who had grown up alongside them. They lived next door, at the village entrance, overhead and underfoot, and in the instant you turned around.
A record of the tales of gods, ghosts, and monsters told by the elders, and of the soil from which they were born.
