The Beast-Sealing Heavenly Art

They say that the Tianyuan Continent was formed when the world first emerged from chaos. The ancestor Yinglong supported the four corners of the earth with his spine, and his breath became wind and rain. Before he died, the ancestor gouged out his eyes to make the sun and moon and broke off his four claws to guard the four directions: the Azure Dragon coiled over the eastern ridge, the White Tiger roared across the western wilderness, the Vermilion Bird blazed over the southern frontier, and the Black Tortoise crouched in the northern sea. He then drew out his own dragon tendons to form the earth's spiritual veins and instructed future generations: "When the Four Symbols return to their places, chaos will be reborn..."

Today, the Tianyuan Continent is divided by five great natural barriers, and spiritual energy flows like the tides through the Four Symbols' formation points:

**The Western Great Wilderness**: Metal-element spiritual energy rages violently. The White Tiger Temple rules the nomadic tribes, while the ruins of an ancient battlefield lie buried deep in the desert.

**The Eastern Beast Forest**: Descendants of the Azure Dragon's bloodline dwell among ancient trees that blot out the sky. The Azure Dragon Pavilion tames vicious beasts with the Ten Thousand Spirits Pact.

**The Northern Sea of Beiming**: In the unending chill of dark waters, the Ethereal Immortal Palace guards the sea eye that leads to the Demon God's tomb.

**The Southern Flame Mountains**: The fire in the earth's core never dies. The Pill Pavilion and Artifact Refining Pavilion vie for the source of the Separation Fire beside rivers of magma.

**The Central Tianyuan City**: The Merchant Alliance controls spiritual-vein trading across the continent, while assassins from the Shadow Hall cast blood-red shadows across glazed rooftops.

In the western Great Wilderness of the Tianyuan Continent stands a border town called Mujiao City. Its sunsets are always wrapped in rust-scented wind. Though this small city sits on the edge of the western wilderness and is home to a branch of the White Tiger Temple, beneath the floor tiles of the Feng family's ancestral hall lies a Black Tortoise scale. This fallen clan is in truth descended from Yinglong's guardians, and for generations its bloodline has sealed the Demon God's left hand beneath the desert.

When he was ten, Feng Jian found half a volume of The Annals of the Dragon Ruins in an old library. Written on the parchment in flood-dragon blood were the words: "The day Yinglong appears, the Four Symbols will weep blood." At the time, he did not know that the faint scale-shaped birthmark on his right shoulder blade was absorbing the chaotic energy seeping up from deep within the earth's spiritual veins.

Children in Mujiao City undergo the "Meridian-Opening Rite" at twelve, but Feng Jian was sent to guard the Dragonblood Pool because his bloodline lay dormant. The red slurry bubbling in the pool was actually Yinglong's blood diluted ten thousand times. Every night at midnight, the dragon carvings on the bronze cauldron at the pool's bottom would burn a mark into his palm, until the day Wang Ba Dan entered the city with an envoy from the Merchant Alliance.

When the black-iron chest containing fragments of the Demon God's left hand passed the ancestral shrine, Feng Jian's birthmark suddenly burned like a brand. The instant he slipped into the Dragonblood Pool, all seventy-two dormant volcanoes in the western desert erupted at once. For the first time, the White Tiger Temple's Gengjin spiritual seed strayed from its course, streaking across the night sky like a trail of blood.
