Blood on the Hexi Corridor

In the frigid winds of the northern deserts, in the fourth year of Yuanshou, twenty-three-year-old Huo Qubing seized the Xiongnu's golden crown, unaware that the lights of Weiyang Palace had already split his fate from Liu Che's. At twelve, the boy was whipped and branded with vermilion before the ice mirror in Ganquan Palace. He shot through the shoulder bones of three Xiongnu scouts with a repeating crossbow, while the oath he shared over wine with the emperor soaked in the scent of lychees and blood. At twenty, a tiger tally hidden in a secret compartment of the bronze pillar at Bailiang Terrace exposed the secret pact between Empress Dowager Dou and the Xiongnu. Liu Che's fingertips, stained with balsam sap, branded power and suspicion onto Huo Qubing's shoulder together. When the golden figure used in the sacrifice to Heaven became a political curse, the warhorses' bones beneath the Qilian Mountains echoed with the clanging of iron hooves through Weiyang Palace. Amid the flames where Huo Qubing buried his captives alive, he glimpsed the vermilion annotation on the emperor's bamboo slips. It had once marked the wine they shared as boys; now it had become a death warrant. In the torrent of history, vermilion rusted the hero's backbone, the emperor's tears seeped into bamboo slips, and the boyhood friends who had once been inseparable became strangers. Only a blood-red scar remained, carving an eternal question into the land of Hexi.
