On a stormy night, Su Wenli was driven out of her home by her stepmother.
Hiding in the shabby stairwell at the end of an alley, she used her old phone to send a private message to the school radio station.
She wrote: [What do you do when it feels like there's no hope of staying alive?]
That very night, she received a call from Lu Yiyang.
"Hello, fellow student. I'm the station manager of the 'Ask the Mountain Wind' radio station. I got your message. Are you all right? Are you somewhere safe?"
Back then, Lu Yiyang was a famous figure at school, the boy all the girls secretly blushed over, and a teen idol who had become an online sensation purely on the strength of his looks.
Su Wenli never dared imagine they would have any contact.
Even less did she expect Lu Yiyang to tell her, "If you ever need anything, you can contact me anytime."
And so they exchanged contact information.
Like two lines crossing in the palm of her hand, Lu Yiyang wound his way into Su Wenli's life, becoming the one precious, warm light in her youth.
No one knew that through countless murky, damp days and nights, hidden from the light,
Su Wenli clumsily, naively, and wholeheartedly loved that boy, year after year.

Years later, Su Wenli's novel was finally adapted into a movie, just as she had hoped.
After the script read-through, Lu Yiyang, one of the candidates for the lead role, ran into Su Wenli in the elevator.
He looked at her. "Would you like to get a meal together?"
Su Wenli looked away. "Thanks, but I have plans."
At the time, Su Wenli innocently thought Lu Yiyang wanted to thank her for recommending him for the role. She had no idea how long he had been looking forward to seeing her again.
Or how much effort it had taken
for him to finally stand before her.
-
"Live happily, Lu Yiyang."
"I will, Su Wenli."
