[Sorry, babies TT. Because of the setting, this book has been extremely difficult to write, so I need to put it on hold for a while. Once I’ve reworked the setting, I’ll revise it extensively from Chapter One and resume updates.]
1.
Ling Wei is a legend among the Federation’s mercenaries.
He is the only person in the Federation to have successfully undergone a second differentiation in the past twenty years, becoming an Ultra S-Class Alpha.
According to rumor, he is emotionally stable, physically formidable, and proficient with all kinds of weapons.
He is unquestionably the organization’s strongest fighter, and the sharpest, most reliable blade in the hands of the powerful.
In everyone’s mind, Ling Wei always comes out on top and never loses a fight.
But in truth, even he had challenges he simply couldn’t overcome, no matter how hard he tried.
The final mission Ling Wei received before leaving the mercenary corps was to serve as bodyguard to the nephew of the Federation chairman and earn his trust.
Wen Yichuan, the Federation chairman’s nephew, was a different person in public than in private, with a vicious temperament.
Since he still hadn’t differentiated, his greatest pleasure was tormenting high-ranking Alphas who took pride in their gender. He had driven off countless bodyguards his uncle had found for him.
On the day Ling Wei arrived, Wen Yichuan looked him up and down and spat out two contemptuous words: "Mutt."
Ling Wei continued smiling as though he hadn’t heard the taunt.
"..." The smile momentarily dazzled Wen Yichuan. He couldn’t help taking a few more glances at Ling Wei’s unfairly beautiful face.
2.
To complete the mission as soon as possible, Ling Wei devoted himself entirely to Wen Yichuan. He even put up with the day Wen Yichuan differentiated and nearly pinned him down, mistaking him for an Omega.
Unfortunately, the two of them simply didn’t click.
The young master taught him to play chess.
Ling Wei studied the board for ages, but still moved his king from the start every time.
The young master flipped the table.
The young master took him to see a musical.
Ling Wei fell asleep against his shoulder and slept like a log, drooling all over the young master’s expensive shirt.
The young master was so angry his lips trembled.
The young master took him to an auction.
Thinking of the disastrous lessons from the previous two times, Ling Wei scratched his head and said, "How about we go shooting instead?"
The young master parted his thin lips and sneered, "Such a brute."
Ling Wei: "O.O"
The last time, Ling Wei accidentally broke a gift the young master had given him.
The young master flew into a rage and rushed over to shove him hard. "Get out!"
Ling Wei’s face went pale. It was his twentieth birthday, and he’d had enough of Wen Yichuan doubting and looking down on him. That very night, he packed his suitcase and left, never to appear again.
From then on, the mercenary corps lost one of its ace mercenaries, while a mysterious leader appeared in an underground organization in the Lower District.
3.
Life on the edge of a blade always goes by quickly.
Every once in a while, Ling Wei would think back to the six months he’d spent by the young master’s side.
The young master had been demanding and sharp-tongued, and was always giving him a hard time, but those had somehow been among the few peaceful times in Ling Wei’s life.
The young master often sneaked into his room in the middle of the night to bandage his wounds. Wen Yichuan always noticed even the little injuries that Ling Wei himself didn’t care about.
The young master said his pheromones smelled awful, yet kept every flower in the room that had absorbed Ling Wei’s pheromones and preserved them as dried flowers.
The young master knew that an Alpha’s second differentiation came with all kinds of aftereffects, so he let Ling Wei use his personal doctor for free.
The young master...
Ling Wei stopped in his tracks, staring in disbelief at the half-figure emerging from the shadows ahead.
After so long apart, Ling Wei didn’t even know what to call him. He murmured, barely louder than a mosquito, "District Chief Wen... Long time no see."
Wen Yichuan was silent for a moment, then stepped out of the shadows. He stood in the chaotic, damp Lower District, looking completely out of place.
"Eight years. It really has been a long time." He gave a self-mocking laugh. "You really hate me that much."
"If the pheromones on those dried flowers could be preserved forever, then every search-and-rescue dog in the Federation would probably remember your scent."
