Bai Jiu ran away from her wedding.
Her uncle and aunt were forcing her to marry the butcher’s younger son, who had the mind of a small child. He was always grinning in a daze, with drool running from the corners of his mouth.
It was only after that drool got on her face that Bai Jiu finally jolted awake from her coma. She was lying on a bright red wedding bed. She shuddered, kicked away the approaching groom, scrambled out of bed, and dashed out of the room.
She ran ahead, with everyone chasing behind.
But there was nowhere left to go, only a dark, wide river.
Forget it. Even drowning would be better than getting married like this!
The good news: she survived.
The bad news: he was going to die.
The man was drowning in the river, his whole body pale, eyes closed, bubbles coming from his mouth as he sank lower and lower, almost to the bottom.
A true hero wouldn’t leave someone to die.
Bai Jiu took a deep breath, plunged in, grabbed his arm, and swam toward the surface.
She never expected that saving him would bring her a ghostly ancestor to deal with!
He was arrogant, impossibly picky, bossy, miserly, suspicious, and fussy! Apart from his good looks, he was utterly useless!
And strangest of all, he didn’t seem to be human...
In the whole village, Bai Jiu was the only one who could see him!

Unexpectedly, something went wrong.
He had been inside the game pod for only three minutes when he heard a cold electronic voice:

Jiang Lushi opened his eyes. A pair of round, wide eyes were staring straight at him.
Oh, not this again.
He’d seen this sort of trick plenty of times. He pushed the other person away and calmly surveyed his surroundings.
Gray walls, an earthen stove, faded paper-cut window decorations...

He asked, “Where is this?”
The big eyes blinked twice. “Baijia Village.”
His gaze landed on the calendar hanging on the wall. He asked again, “What’s that? 2000?”
The big eyes looked over, tilting their head. “Yeah! The year 2000, the millennium!”
