Radiation

A woman cradled her six-month-old baby as she happily crossed the narrow bridge she had crossed countless times before. Suddenly, the earth rumbled like it had been struck by lightning, stirring up endless cries and roars from deep underground. In the violent shaking of the earthquake, the baby slipped from her arms and fell into the abyss beneath the bridge.

He lay swaddled among stones that glimmered faintly, as if countless cold eyes were watching him.

Startled awake, he began to cry. His cries were ethereal and piercing, echoing between the icy stone walls until they became sympathetic, chilling, pitying, and unanswered.

He became radiation.

Everyone argued endlessly over the matter of Di Miao, a human nuclear reactor. At last, on a noisy afternoon, the earth shook again, and a series of leaks brought the interminable debate to an end.

That day, Di Miao sat quietly in a small room. The door slowly opened.

"Humanity needs you."

Di Miao looked up and replied:

"I will serve humanity."

[Born from the abyss, he turns all the clamor into silence, a silence that seals it away.]

[He is an omen.]
