When Shen Ye turns around, she sees Yang Zhou sitting in a corner of the courtyard, head lowered, looking like a little ball of glutinous rice.

Yang Zhou: "Shen Ye, I want to be thin."

Shen Ye: "Easy. One word: grind."

Yang Zhou: "I just want to lie flat."

Yang Zhou does eventually lose weight, but it's because illness wastes him away.

"Shen Ye, the fortune-teller said I won't live past twenty-two."

"You fool. That fortune-teller was lying to you."

The day Yang Heyin gives Shen Ye to a powerful family in Yucheng, Yang Zhou closes his eyes on his sickbed.

Only after arriving in Yucheng does Shen Ye learn that her story is supposed to be "a cannon-fodder character caught in a whirlpool of political intrigue."

Cannon fodder? No way. She changes her own script to "An English major transmigrates and works her way up to become the chief interpreter."

Shen Ye discovers a familiar person has appeared in the story, under a new name and identity.
