Ning Yu was on the verge of tears. To avoid becoming someone else’s meal, he struggled to reach the shallows, where there were fewer natural predators and he could observe humans more easily.
After munching through a leaf of seaweed, Ning Yu finally relaxed and sprawled on a coral reef, basking in the sun. He hadn’t even enjoyed a minute of it before someone scooped him up and took him home, where he was given a huge aquarium measuring one meter by two meters.

The man who caught him was a corporate CEO. In the man’s office, Ning Yu absorbed all the knowledge he picked up from the things the man taught him, both intentionally and in passing. He figured that if he ever turned back into a human, he might be able to find work without missing a beat.
His wish came true, but only halfway.
He turned back into a human and looked just like he had before. But he had no ID or proof of education, so no legitimate company would hire him. Even a dishwashing job required a medical exam to get a health certificate.
