As the richest widow in town, Sang Qiao inherited a fortune from her husband, who died young.
A scholar who was on his way to the capital for the imperial exams fell ill outside her home.
Kindhearted Sang Qiao took him in.
But late that night, the handsome scholar shed his human skin. Holding a bloody human heart in his hands, he came to her bedside and said tenderly:
"Qiao, your skin is so beautiful. Could I borrow it?"
It turned out he was a Painted Skin demon who peeled off people's skins and ate their hearts.
At the critical moment, a flash of white light appeared, and the Painted Skin demon was reduced to dust.
A handsome, distinguished man stood before her.
He said he was Ao Lie, the Third Prince of the Dragon Palace in the Western Sea. A villain had framed him and turned him into a white horse. She had saved him, so he had come to repay her.
In the end, he even offered himself to her.
Faced with the little white dragon offering himself as her husband,
Sang Qiao was just about to spit out a "Pah!" when she stopped herself.
Looking at the Dragon Palace's dazzling treasures,
she felt her cheeks flush, clasped her hands to her face, gazed at him, and called, "Husband~"
Ao Lie: ...
A year later, by Guanyin Bodhisattva's command, the little white dragon had to escort the monk Xuanzang on his journey west to obtain the scriptures.
Little White Dragon: My dear, I'll be right back. When I return, we'll go back to being a loving couple.
Sang Qiao shot him a sidelong glance. "Hmph! I'm only cut out to be a widow, never an abandoned wife!"
Thinking of the dragon palace full of treasures left to her by her second husband, Sang Qiao smiled with delight.
Being a widow was far more carefree and fun than being married.
Halfway through his journey, the little white dragon returned to visit his wife, only to find a little green snake coiled around her ankle, hissing and flicking its tongue.
Little Green Snake: Whatever you have, I have too.
Little White Dragon: You insolent snake demon! Stay away from my wife!
Little Green Snake: You have two, and so do I. I can give her pleasure too.
The little white dragon was consumed by rage. "You insolent scoundrel! Take this!"
