As a senior executive, Julian is sent to Penacony to negotiate a business deal.
The negotiations go very smoothly. After a great deal of drinking and toasting, he's invited to experience Penacony's signature attraction: confession.
“Confession? Let me think. Oh, I've committed so many crimes, I can't pick just one to confess.”
“Buying land cheaply during an economic collapse, then driving all the original residents off it? Accepting an emperor's commission and slaughtering everyone who wanted to overthrow the tyrant? Or promising to help a planet recover, then leaving it to a subordinate and washing my hands of it, watching it perish in a disaster? ... Oh, there are too many! We could talk for three days and nights!”
Drunk, he rambles excitedly, carried away by the fantasy that he's the villain of a story. When no one responds, he impatiently pushes open the secret door separating him from his listener.
“Why aren't you saying anything?”
Then he freezes, sobered up considerably.
The person behind the door, staring at him with disgust, is his dead first love.
He even carved a little tombstone for him and goes back every year to mourn him :)
