My Years as a Neighborhood Police Officer

Bai Jinci was twenty-four when he reactivated his father's police call sign.

As the child of fallen heroes, he had decided from a young age to avenge his parents and make his mark in the field they had dedicated their lives to.

After graduating from the police academy, Bai Jinci fulfilled his dream and became a proud people's police officer.

But during the years he'd spent studying in the north, the country had grown stronger and technology had advanced. The graves of the criminals who had killed his parents had been cleared for redevelopment years ago.

With nowhere to turn and no one left to avenge, Bai Jinci finished his probationary period and followed his assignment to Gardenia Street Police Station, where he became a proud neighborhood cop.

On his first day, his senior colleagues kindly warned him, "The auxiliary officers at our station are a pretty tough bunch. When you go on calls with them, remember to be polite."

Seeing that his assigned area consisted of just one residential complex, Bai Jinci thought the station looked down on him because he was new.

Compared to his colleagues' districts, his had no schools, shopping streets, or entertainment venues. It seemed like an easy place to manage.

But on his first day out on patrol, the tall auxiliary officer Li Kanjie, who was showing him around, grinned mockingly and said, "Lijing Gardens is famous around here as a mistress complex. Half the people living here are someone's second or third mistress. Whatever reason for calling the police you can imagine, you'll find it here. Someone even died here last month. Good luck, Officer Bai!"

People say that grassroots police work is the best way to witness the diversity of the human species. After less than half a month on the job, Bai Jinci declared, "Every day at work, I really want to call the police!"

Watching his little face flush with anger at the bizarre people he had to deal with, Li Kanjie smiled and said, "Calling the police probably won't help, but hugging your big brother Jie definitely will."
