Xia Lian has graduated from college. He currently works as a residential community security guard while studying for the civil service exam.
The desk phone rang.
He had just finished writing an essay question when he picked up. The voice on the other end was like cold fog that had lingered too long, damp and low, mixed with the sound of insect legs rubbing dry shells, feelers waving, and something tapping against a window, rustling without pause. The man's voice sounded a little aggrieved. "There's... a bug in my house."
Xia Lian smiled calmly and kicked open the door with a pest-control spray in hand. "Are you saying your home has a pest problem, resident?"
"Thank you for calling. The Xianghe New Village Security Office is at your service."

The community is short on funds, so life as its only security guard isn't easy.
The elderly neighbor who loves to chat has a poor memory and accidentally sucks people dry.
The little girl in Building 4 jumps rope from dusk until midnight and never goes to kindergarten.
The male resident in Unit 507 keeps having accidents after his home is flooded with bugs. It's hard not to feel sorry for him.
And yet this seemingly bizarre life is Xia Lian's everyday routine.
[Duty Log - Recorder: Xia Lian]
[Visitor Registration: Every night, people claiming to be friends of residents come to visit. Most are unfamiliar faces, and no footage has been found of them leaving the community. The cleaning auntie complains that splattered human remains are hard to clean up. Friendly reminder to residents to observe public order and decency.]
[On Halloween, a resident complained that the screams, laughter, and hook noises were disturbing the peace. Though I'm sure it was only the wind scraping and hissing... Midnight parties thrown by young people are always scary, aren't they? The security office can provide muffins and hot tea.]
[Visitor Registration: At 12:03 a.m., I received a call that someone had torn down a copy of the Residents' Rules posted on the wall. I arrived and put up a new copy within two minutes, but the scene wasn't looking too good.]
[Stray cats are usually round or oval, and ginger or gray-black. Residents should be reminded to keep their distance and report any other variants immediately!]
[Several desserts mysteriously appeared in the guard room again today. Love from Xianghe New Village.]
[Why did I hear someone say not to go near the security office because there's danger inside? I'm in there every day.]
