Summer Echoes [Marriage Before Love]

One summer afternoon, Yao Yuan received an anonymous letter she’d assumed would never get a reply. It came from a charity activity she’d happened to take part in outside of work.

Her first impression: beautiful handwriting, like it was printed.

She called him Mr. Beautiful Handwriting.

Later, they became meal buddies who had never met in person.

After that, she impulsively married Mr. Beautiful Handwriting, whom she’d only met once.

On the day they were supposed to register their marriage, Yao Yuan overslept. When Deng Jian called, she apologized awkwardly. “I’m sorry, I forgot we were getting married today.”

Deng Jian simply replied, “It’s okay. Take your time.”

Before the wedding, Deng Jian had told Yao Yuan, “Let’s give it a year. If anything about this makes you uncomfortable during that time, you can leave whenever you want.”

But Yao Yuan said, “Don’t worry! I had a fortune-teller check our charts. We’re doomed to be together, so I’ll leave when the year is up. I definitely won’t cause you any trouble.”

Later, Deng Jian went to find that fortune-teller. “You got the reading wrong. We’re destined to be together.”

On an afternoon woven with the sound of cicadas, their story blossomed in the summer heat, and their love echoed on through the season.
