Moon Over the West River: Night Journey

The bright moon startled magpies from the branches; the breeze stirred cicadas in the midnight air. Amid the fragrance of rice blossoms, people spoke of a bountiful harvest, as frogs sang all around. A few stars shone beyond the sky, and a light rain fell before the hills. The old thatched inn by the forest shrine appeared suddenly as the road turned over the stream bridge. Moonlight shone among the pines, and clear springs flowed over the stones. Sparse stars and scattered rain, startled magpies and singing cicadas. Rice blossoms filled the air with fragrance, and frogs sang all around. The enchanting countryside scene leaves one refreshed and filled with endless poetic feeling. Tenderness flows like water, a cherished meeting feels like a dream. How could we bear to look back at the road leading away from the Magpie Bridge? If two hearts remain true for a long time, why should they be together morning and night? The forest has its own birds; the bright moon shines in the sparse-starred night. Beneath the moon over the western river, longing fills the night. What year is this, beneath the moon that first shone upon us...
