Everyone in Lincheng knows a woman codenamed Mountain Ghost. Her signature long tassel earrings with Mountain Ghost coins are the last thing every assassination target wants to see.

One day, Shi Shanyue got a mysterious phone call asking her to protect the caller's wife.
When she arrived, all she found was a terrified pregnant woman hiding in a wardrobe, clutching a knife and warning her to stay away.
She only smiled faintly. "Your husband hired me to protect you."
Because of the chaos in her family, the pregnant Jiang Yuanyuan had no choice but to flee. Shi Shanyue accompanied her all the way, genuinely intending nothing more than to protect her.
At long last, they reached Jiang Yuanyuan's mother's family, but the woman mysteriously disappeared.
Until five years later.
While searching for the person who had murdered her husband, Jiang Yuanyuan crossed paths with her again.
"Need a hand, darling?" Her low voice sounded right behind her.
In the pitch-black night, she heard only a soft chuckle. "It's been so long, and you're still just the same."

As she searched for the killer, Jiang Yuanyuan discovered that all the evidence pointed to Shi Shanyue.
"Did you kill my husband?" Jiang Yuanyuan snarled, pointing a gun at her. "What exactly was your motive for getting close to me?"
Her relentless questions made Shi Shanyue's heart ache. She said nothing, which only convinced Jiang Yuanyuan even more that she was the killer.
She never imagined that the person she'd spent so much time with was the one who had killed her husband.
After a long silence, Shi Shanyue finally said, "I didn't kill him." Tears welled in her eyes. "Trust me."
The gun remained pressed to her chest, with no sign of lowering. Shi Shanyue smiled, then turned the muzzle toward her own head and said bitterly, "Are you going to be my enemy too?"
1. Both are strong! Not a Mary Sue story. Younger woman pursues older woman.
2. Top-tier romantic tension!
3. The top snaps at everyone, especially anyone who calls her wife a pretty face with no substance.
4. The love-hate dynamic is real (with a misunderstanding trope), and so are the feelings.
5. A lover who takes the lead.
