As an utterly ordinary high school student, Chen Lingyu had the "good fortune" to witness the apocalypse begin.
The world was full of dangers, and people were more frightening than ghosts. She had long since stopped expecting anything from human nature... until she met Su Yunli. It turned out even a heart as cold as ashes could reignite for the sun.
When Chen Lingyu was separated from her companions and trapped among a horde of corpses, Su Yunli appeared at her side like a deity and led her out of hell.
Su Yunli was so wonderful. She saved everyone equally, again and again, without regard for her own safety. She was unlike anyone else in the world.
Could someone like her look only at Chen Lingyu forever? Could they stay together forever?
But with her right in front of her, Chen Lingyu suddenly lost her nerve. All she dared to do was secretly kiss her on the cheek.
The moonlight was beautiful. Chen Lingyu's life now had someone she wanted to protect: her dearest Commander Sister.
Since beginning her missions, Su Yunli had met all kinds of people, but no one was like Chen Lingyu: so contradictory, and so beautiful.
From the first time she saw Chen Lingyu, she felt this girl only seemed warm. In truth, she shut herself off and kept everyone at a distance, including Su Yunli.
That feeling lasted until Su Yunli saved Chen Lingyu in the tide of corpses. The girl's attitude did a complete turnaround.
She was still bristling with everyone else, but whenever she saw Su Yunli, she quickly dropped her guard and put on a sweet, obedient smile.
And later... Chen Lingyu would secretly kiss her in the middle of the night.
Su Yunli never called her out on it.
Everyone deserves a chance to choose.
Since they began spending time together, Chen Lingyu had grown rapidly. She was smart and resourceful, and could even do better than Su Yunli.
The first time Chen Lingyu ever felt loved was in the apocalypse. For the rest of her life, she would be willing to go through fire and water for that warmth.
Chen Lingyu is a bundle of contradictions: lonely and world-weary.
She's cold but not heartless, soft-hearted with friends, and prone to wild outbursts but with limits. No one has ever truly understood her, and no one has been able to enter her heart.
She'd been alone for a long time. Su Yunli's arrival showed her the light she'd been waiting for. Su Yunli had a sense of conviction Chen Lingyu had never seen before, along with resilience and integrity. Of course Chen Lingyu was drawn to her, and of course she pursued her.
She once asked Su Yunli, "Why do you save these people?"
In the apocalypse, you can't even be sure you'll save yourself, can you? Isn't it foolish to risk your life to save others?
But Su Yunli smiled and answered gently, as she had so many times before:
Because we're all fellow countrymen.
Slow burn. The two leads meet later in the story, so please keep that in mind!
