After listening to his wicked consort's slander, the foolish emperor arranged marriages between the sons of two venerable ministers.
One was Jiang Yingxiu, the frivolous, womanizing younger son of a minister who had served three reigns. The other was Li Zhi, the most promising young general in the household of a prince with a different surname.
Jiang Yingxiu did everything he could to end this absurd marriage between two men as soon as possible. In the end, he succeeded. To divorce him, Li Zhi defied the emperor and volunteered to guard the border, swearing not to return until the northern tribes were driven back.
On the day the terrible news arrived, Jiang Yingxiu was packing to head to the border and thank Li Zhi. Before he could leave, news spread across the country that Li Zhi had been lured into a trap and killed through a conspiracy between an enemy general and officials of their own court. The Li family rebelled and stormed the palace, and the dynasty changed hands overnight.
Jiang Yingxiu took up Li Zhi's spear and went to the front in his place.
After dying in battle, Jiang Yingxiu remained in the underworld for three hundred years, searching for an old friend. Then one day, he was told that the person he had searched for in vain was the Celestial Lord of the North Pole, who had long since returned to his place in Heaven after completing his tribulation.
Jiang Yingxiu turned and entered the cycle of reincarnation.
