How should one describe the relationship between Miss Agnes and Duke Richard? Subordinate and superior, a poor man's daughter and an English nobleman, comrades in the treacherous family struggles, a pair of secret lovers beneath the storm clouds gathering over a tottering empire...
Agnes loved Richard deeply. There was no denying it. But she also knew all too well that the duke wanted many things, and love was only an insignificant one among them.
So when she was eventually captured by the enemy and abandoned by the duke, Agnes felt no anger, only regret... All right, she admitted it. Perhaps she was a little heartbroken, too.
Having given up hope, Agnes thought she could finally be free, only to find herself reborn six times, each life with a different identity.
After every rebirth, Agnes resolved never to have anything to do with Duke Richard again. But no matter how she tried to avoid him, she always ended up caught in the conflict somehow, and eventually died horribly in one way or another.
Agnes was tired.
In her seventh life, she decided to stop running.
So Agnes, reborn as an assassin, readily accepted orders from an adversary from one of her previous lives and set out to assassinate Duke Richard.
Then, at the very first sight of Richard, she pressed a knife to his throat and whispered in the ear of her former lover:
"My dear Duke, it seems the only way to solve our current predicament is for me to become your wife."
