Snow Splashes Across the White Rainbow

[Theater-kid princess vs. loyal, doglike assassin boss] Serious drama

Blurb:

Twelve years ago, the crown prince died of poison, and no one dared bring up choosing a new crown prince.

First, the emperor was still at the height of his power.

Second, the crown prince's poisoning implicated so many people that everyone at court lived in fear, looking out only for their own safety.

Third, the Yong Dynasty chose the worthy, not the eldest legitimate son. The emperor looked at his sanctimonious third son, a military general; his proper yet sinister fifth son, a civil official; and his seventh son, a mama's boy who only knew how to hide behind his marquis uncle, and fell into deep thought. None of them seemed capable of shouldering the responsibility.

And then there was the princess, who kept insisting that the culprit who poisoned her brother had not yet been caught. The emperor had driven her out of the palace to live elsewhere, and she'd become a martial type after mixing with the imperial guards.

Twelve years later, on the emperor's fiftieth birthday, his power was no longer at its peak.

The show was about to begin.

[Reading Guide]

1. Plot-driven, an atheist nation, one-on-one romance.

2. The male lead has unrequited feelings early on. The ending is happy.

3. Justice will ultimately triumph over evil.

P.S. Entirely fictional setting. The official system is loosely based on the Tang and Song dynasties, with some simplification. I picked a neighboring enemy country with a nice-sounding name. Apologies if anyone is offended.

Some of the Chinese herbs and poisons mentioned are made up, while others are based on research, but their effects are whatever the plot requires.
