A short historical girls' love story. Happy ending, mutual firsts, nine-year age gap.
A princess sent away for a political marriage x a resourceful female general
Blurb:
Yuan Luo was the princess Jin sent to Xilin for a political marriage after losing a war.
Since she was still young, the Crown Prince ignored her, and she became an utterly neglected Crown Princess in the Eastern Palace.
But she preferred the peace and quiet. For years, she made herself look ugly and acted up, doing everything she could to avoid the Crown Prince.
The only time she was willing to show her true face was when she met Su Yu'an.
The renowned female general of Xilin.
Before arriving in Xilin, Yuan Luo had always imagined Su Yu'an as the hulking, muscular figure of popular rumor, the kind who could effortlessly lift a massive iron hammer with one hand.
But when Su Yu'an rode out of the city to greet her on the Crown Prince's behalf, all Yuan Luo saw was a dashing red figure atop a fine horse. Her features were cool and beautiful, her gaze resolute and cold, yet when she looked at Yuan Luo, it softened into a faint smile.
She said, "Your Highness, the journey must have been exhausting."
She had made a point of speaking in Jin's language.
So when Yuan Luo met her for the first time, she couldn't stop her eyes from stinging.
A political marriage was truly painful, especially since Jin had lost the war. Her title of princess was nothing but a joke in Xilin.
Fortunately, Su Yu'an pitied her for being so young in a foreign land and denied the Crown Prince's affection, so she always looked after her.
Yuan Luo took full advantage of this and visited the general's residence every few days.
Later, when she grew up and noticed the Crown Prince looking at her more and more strangely, even asking to spend the night in her rooms, Yuan Luo sensed a terrible danger.
At the time, the Emperor of Xilin was gravely ill. The Crown Prince and two princes fought and schemed against one another for the throne. They had all tried to win over Su Yu'an, who commanded a powerful army, but she had rejected them all.
Su Yu'an's power was second only to the Emperor's. If not for the fact that she was a woman, she might have been dealt with long ago under some pretext, for being too powerful and threatening the throne.
Yuan Luo watched Su Yu'an, who cared for her so attentively and had long grown used to her keeping her company. Then, during one tea gathering, she accidentally revealed the bruises on her wrist.
When Su Yu'an showed concern, Yuan Luo gazed at her through tearful eyes and, weak and pitiful, complained of the Crown Prince's violence. At the same time, her hands gently climbed up Su Yu'an's arm beneath the sheer fabric.
She knew she had already fallen for Su Yu'an, and that Su Yu'an feared her tears most of all.
Su Yu'an looked away from her bruises and met her misty, hopeful eyes. Then she heard Yuan Luo say:
"Please protect me, General Sister..."
