[Timid, fragile little bunny * domineering, controlling wolf]
Song Guili knows she has always been the one nobody wants around.
As soon as her parents abandoned her, her clan couldn't wait to send her off to the Pei household, a distant branch of the family with almost no connection to her.
An orphan with no one to rely on, living under someone else's roof, she was inevitably bullied and mocked by everyone in the Pei household.
Everyone despised and rejected her, except for one person: Pei Zhu, the eldest son of the Pei household.
*
Pei Zhu is strict and aloof with others. He went to war with his father from a young age and has spilled countless gallons of blood, earning himself the fearsome name “Cold-Faced God of Slaughter.”
Everyone in the Pei household takes a detour when they see him. Yet his timid-looking cousin, who came from a distant branch of the family, is always eager to approach him.
She often appears in Pei Zhu's line of sight. Whenever he turns around, he sees her clutching the hem of her clothes, softly calling, “Cousin.”
Her faint voice sounds in his ears like a tiny hook gently scratching at his heart. His Adam's apple bobs, and his gaze grows darker and darker.
Those who know him see the two of them together all the time and tease him, saying he must have captured the young lady's heart somehow, and she'll be clinging to him from now on.
Pei Zhu just smiles without comment. He, too, thinks her feelings for him are plain as day.
But it all ends when he sees her blushing as she accepts an ambiguously romantic bouquet from another man.
Later, he crushes every one of those flowers beneath his feet and corners her against the wall, leaving her nowhere to run.
Pei Zhu's eyes are dark and unfathomable. He forces her to lift her head and slowly asks, each word deliberate, “Shouldn't I be the one you love?”
*
Song Guili doesn't love him, of course.
Whenever she approaches him, her frightened hands tremble, but she never passes up an opportunity to get close to him.
Because then no one else dares to bully her. Somehow, though, he has misunderstood her intentions completely.
*
She steels herself and bravely answers him, “I've always... only thought of you as an older brother.”
To her surprise, he scoffs. “But I've never thought of you as a younger sister.”
