He stood there, gazing down as petals fell around him. He looked serene and untroubled. The cigarette in his hand burned down in the breeze, and smoke concealed half his face, making his features hard to see. "Qin Nian, what kind of person... do you like?"
Qin Nian lifted her head. The man in the black coat looked down at her, studying her carefully. He looked serious, hopeful, and uncertain.
After a long while, he pulled off his hat and placed it on the girl's head. Then, carefully, he gave her a hug. "Don't look at me like that. I'm afraid I'll think you like me."
2. A year later, the man who had disappeared returned and appeared before her in the hospital.
"I'm sick, Gu Cheng." Her voice was very soft, but her eyes were fixed on him.
She was like a rose barely clinging to life, ready to scatter with the slightest breeze. Gu Cheng felt as though his insides were being crushed by a blunt instrument. He suppressed the turmoil inside him and helped the woman, now painfully thin, to her feet. It was also the first time he had ever doubted the faith he had devoted himself to. He had gone into the thick of danger to protect this country, yet no one had treated his girl with kindness.
"I took the wrong path, Nian Nian. Come home. I'll take you home."
Qin Nian finally looked up at him, staring openly in front of everyone. She had imagined this moment countless times. Now that it was here, she thought she should smile, so she forced one and clutched his coat, leaning close. "Did you come to save me?"
He gazed at her longingly, keeping his expression calm. "I can't save you. The only person who can save you is yourself."
On the clean floor, the reflection showed the man carefully bending down to embrace the girl before him.
"But whoever stands in your way, I'll help you kill them all, okay?"
"Okay."
The boy who had stood atop the mountain finally came down from the temple hall and stood beside her as an equal.
He was telling her that even if they were doomed to suffer, even if longing pierced him to the bone, he would stay by her side forever and be her guiding light.
