The evil dragon Ita was one final villain mission away from completing her KPI and retiring in style.
As luck would have it, her world had just taken on a new project: a virtual reality game called Heart of the Hero.
Ita took one look at the script the client had handed her: a hero fights a dragon, a timeless classic.
She gave a cold snort. They thought a dragon could be tested with such a clichéd plot? They shouldn't underestimate her bond with retirement!
But she waited and waited, and the hero player never showed up.
Enough time had passed for hundreds of main story quests.
Those foolish humans must have gotten lost somewhere, Ita thought.
She decided to disguise herself as a human and offer the hero player some off-the-books assistance.
But she never expected the player to see through her disguise at first sight.
Ita was horrified. "Are you using cheats?"
The player, Shi Yi, lowered the brim of her hat and put on a serious face. "If I didn't turn them off, does that mean I'm cheating?"
Ita didn't know about combat music.
With her identity exposed, Ita dropped the act.
As the game's villain, she dutifully urged the player to get on with the main quest.
"The adventuring party is just across the river. Go talk to them now!"
She turned around, only to find the player digging up a grave 800 meters away, muttering something about a hidden achievement.
"The king has issued a recruitment order. Hurry up and sign up!"
The player: "But the dog belonging to Auntie Lin, who lives east of the village entrance, has gone missing... Isn't that more important than going to collect the shut-in princess who's freeloading at your house?"
"There's a better weapon in the treasure chest. Hurry up and ditch your junk!"
The player looked at her simple, understated beginner's gear, then at the flashy, gaudy golden greatsword. "It's ugly. I refuse."
Damn it, Ita clenched her fists.
"Hey, when are you finally going to do the main quest?!"
Player Shi Yi: "Hehe, next time. I definitely will."
Ita: "Can't you let a dragon retire? :("
The world's first virtual reality game, the large-scale open-world adventure Heart of the Hero, is now open for public testing.
As a rebellious (crossed out) creative player who liked ordering fried rice at bars, Shi Yi immediately grabbed a spot.
She looked up a guide. The main story was utterly unremarkable.
The fun-loving player Shi Yi triggered bugs hundreds of times, finally breaking the beginner's tutorial and charging off to cause chaos outside the main quest.
