In the third year after He Xiangfeng's death, Lu Yi was assigned to watch over a canary.
The other person was locked on the top floor of a tower behind layer upon layer of security. Lu Yi admitted that he was the most beautiful person he'd ever seen, and treated the pretty young master with good humor. Even when the canary seemed to regard him as an enemy and smashed every luxury item in the Amber Room, Lu Yi could keep a straight face and say, "Sir, please don't hurt your hand."
He was nothing more than a pet of those highest-ranking officials. Otherwise, they wouldn't have hired Lu Yi to look after him.
The other's cold hands were clasped in Lu Yi's, held firmly enough that he couldn't resist. His long, slender fingers suddenly tightened.
Lu Yi was conscientious about his work. He owed his life to He Xiangfeng. Even though he had already forgotten that person's face and voice, he would never offend the officials, if only for Xiangfeng's sake.
The little guy was at odds with him in every way, and one day, he actually ran away.
Lu Yi worried about his assignment. The canary had never left its cage and knew nothing of the world. He was nothing like the rumored He Xiangfeng, who spun webs of connections like a spider. Yet no matter how hard Lu Yi searched, he couldn't find him.
The canary was staying in an underground district crowded with crime bosses. He took the confidential documents from three years ago that one of his subordinates handed him. After reading them, he burned the papers.
Everyone outside was saying that a canary had escaped, and investigators from top to bottom were going frantic trying to find him.
He spotted Lu Yi in the crowd and turned away with a frown, only for Lu Yi to catch up and carefully take hold of his wrist.
The fragile beauty, as delicate as glass, irritably slapped his hand away and, for once, pleaded with him. "I'm begging you, let me go."
"The two of us should never have met in the first place."
Canary: A small bird with a slender body, bred for research and display.
The original breed was kept in an exquisite cage for its entire life. Its body was delicate, and it would succumb to oxygen deprivation before a human would. Because it once took a disaster upon itself for someone else, it was regarded as a guardian of life.
A subtle cyberpunk setting, older gong and younger shou, 1v1 happy ending, no substitutes, with an amnesia trope for the gong. They both cherish the person in their memories.
