Mertis's original life was supposed to go like this: at the age of eight, she would be adopted by a British couple vacationing in the United States, and at eleven, she would receive her Hogwarts acceptance letter and become an excellent witch.
But a magical outburst at age seven accidentally connected her to the dreams of a boy from another world named Will, and she gave him a flower called a "Link." This pulled her into a world without wizards, where she became an outsider. Without proper instruction, she would originally have become an Obscurial and endangered this world, but every night in her dreams she unexpectedly saw the life she was meant to have, and began taking wizarding lessons in her sleep.
Everyone around her is convinced that Mertis is a crazy girl, but she never stops believing she's a witch. Then she moves to Hawkins with her adoptive parents and transfers to the town's only middle school, where she and the friends she makes begin an incredible adventure.
