For the nth time, xxx was sent away to board with someone by her own mother. This time, her foster mom had an oval face and a side ponytail, and her voice was as gentle as flowing water.
"Welcome home." She clasped her hands together nervously, her cheeks flushed red.
xxx gave a polite nod. "Hello, new Mom."
Her new Mom was an exceptionally good-natured woman.
Even when xxx poured boiling water over the orchids she had lovingly raised for years, and did other awful things,
she still smiled warmly.
Until one quiet night, she went into xxx's room to tuck her in. Her fingertips brushed beneath xxx's eyes, her warm breath against her ear.
The woman's voice was tender and helpless.
"xxx, you're such a bad girl."

Her new Mom had a girlfriend she'd been with for five years.
They loved each other deeply, had been together for years, and had decided to marry the following year. Their friends were envious. What a sweet couple.
Her new Mom had done xxxxx for her, thoughtful, motherly things.
Until one quiet night, xxx once again saw the woman weeping uncontrollably, humbly begging her girlfriend not to leave her alone.
The tears struck her heart, and xxx made up her mind.
"If someone like her can become your wife, why can't I?"

The day I went public with my relationship with Big Sis, I got a message from my former love rival.
She sent me a photo.
It showed a hand-knitted red scarf, a handmade cup, a ceramic bowl, a carved seal...
"Has Big Sis ever made any of these for you?" my former rival asked.
I called her.
"What does that prove?" I asked.
"It only proves that Big Sis used to like you a lot and treated you like her treasure. But what about now?" I chuckled.
"You're in the past."
My former rival seemed to have lost her mind. She shrieked, "Big Sis loved me for five years! What makes you think she'll change her mind? She's only with you for fun, understand?!"
I turned to look at Big Sis, sleeping peacefully beside me. The little bedside lamp cast a soft glow, and her breathing was slow and even.
My heart softened despite myself.
"Oh, that's none of your damn business."
