In Qili Village of the Qi Dynasty, there was a couple who kept having one child after another, determined to keep going until they had a son who could bring glory to the family. It wasn't until their sixth child, a boy, was born that they finally accepted their fate.
People say a son-in-law is half a son. With all their boys married off, they would have three sons, at least. The old couple could only comfort themselves with that thought.
But when their eldest boy came of age, he showed no interest in getting married. He spent all day in the pigpen, seemingly rooted to the spot. The family's pigs grew fatter and fatter, but he showed no concern for his own marriage.
Their second boy spent all day busy at the stove. The food he came up with had made the family quite prosperous, but couldn't he at least go with his little father to meet some potential matches?
Their third boy was obsessed with embroidery. Old Man Qi specially hired an embroiderer to teach him, hoping that one day he could use the skill to marry into a wealthy family and enjoy a life of comfort. His embroidery grew better and better, and even the biggest embroidery shop in town wanted to hire him. Yet as he grew older, he still hadn't taken a liking to any man.
Their fourth boy was the hardest to manage. He was strong as an ox and had even learned archery from a hunter. He was a force to be reckoned with, spending all day in the mountains, hunting game and wild boars, and even claiming he would hunt a tiger. Well, it wasn't that he didn't want to marry. It was that no one dared take him.
Their fifth boy was the frailest. His birth had taken a toll on his health, and he was sickly every day. The old couple couldn't bear to marry him off, so they thought they might as well find him a husband and keep him close, where they could feel at ease. But all the candidates were no good. Not only was their fifth boy unwilling, but neither were the old couple.
Their sixth boy was still young, so there was no need to worry yet. But he spent every day with a book borrowed from the neighbor's older brother, shutting out the world to devote himself to the classics. That was worrying too.
The old couple in the Qi family fretted endlessly, never realizing that their sons' destined partners were quietly entering their lives.
