The Little Chef of Chang’an

Cui Shiyu transmigrated and became the daughter of an ordinary family in Chang’an.

Her original parents had died young, leaving her to raise her two little sisters alone. Life was hard.

After her childhood sweetheart broke off their engagement, she threw herself into a river in grief.

With her family so poor they could barely afford to eat, Cui Shiyu turned to the trade she knew best: in her previous life, three generations of her family had been chefs.

She sold breakfast, set up a street stall, opened a restaurant, and started a chain... Cui Shiyu’s life grew better and better.

In Chang’an, the name “Cui Family Eatery” became famous. Everyone knew it.

The people who had once waited to see Cui Shiyu make a fool of herself all came to make amends:

Relatives who had ignored her came to apologize in person.

Neighbors who had kept their distance offered their help one after another.

Even the former fiancé who had insisted on breaking off the engagement brought her another lavish betrothal gift.

Cui Shiyu’s response: “Sorry, I don’t have time.”

The pork knuckle with rock sugar in the pot wasn’t finished yet.

Xie Xiao of Guangwen Academy had a face like fine jade and the elegance of a gifted scholar. He had never been interested in romance.

When his classmates exchanged poems under the moon, he read. When his friends exchanged scented sachets, he memorized poetry.

All the young men in the city were smitten with love, but his heart was as still as water.

Until the day he rescued a young woman from drowning.

At first, he only hoped she would be safe and healthy, and that her restaurant would prosper.

Later, he hoped her stove would always be warm, that she would never lack food or firewood, and that she would stop burning her hands with hot oil.

Later still... he found himself jealous of the customers who could openly praise her cooking, and even secretly memorized the faces of every man who looked at her twice.

It wasn’t that romance had never caught his eye. He simply hadn’t met the one who would capture his heart.

Theme: Happiness comes from hard work
