In her previous life, Jiang Ruyi wanted to marry a refined gentleman of great learning, but an imperial decree instead granted her in marriage to the least promising of the Pei family's three sons.
Her husband could barely read, spoke and behaved like a boor, and knew nothing but how to wield a spear and a staff. He was no different from a rough country warrior. She held her nose and endured three years with him.
Eventually, she could take it no longer and asked for a divorce. She thought he would refuse, but he silently pressed his fingerprint onto the divorce papers.
Though surprised, she didn't ask a single question. After leaving the Pei family, she never wanted to have anything to do with him again.
But when she returned to her own family, the Jiangs got into trouble.
During her imprisonment, the courtyard was cold and empty. To her surprise, she found herself missing the noisy quarrels she used to have with that crude ex-husband.
He was rough, reckless, uneducated, knew nothing of music, chess, calligraphy, or painting, and had no understanding of romance. In bed, he always demanded too much.
Yet even when she ignored him, he would grin and cook for her. When he was injured, he would still stubbornly carry her. In the depths of winter, amid heavy snowfall, he climbed to the mountaintop to pick a snow lotus that could cure her illness.
Only after she saw the people around her clearly and understood so many things did she realize that the few moments of warmth she had known in this life had all come from him.
Just before she breathed her last, that man rode back from the border without stopping, day and night. Like a god of death, he hacked a path through the crowd and charged into the courtyard where she was imprisoned, clutching her in his arms with bloodshot eyes.
"Jiang Ruyi, I won't let you die! I'll go get the best doctor right now. Even if you've got only one breath left, you have to hold on!"
He was still as crude as ever. Jiang Ruyi glared at him resentfully, then closed her eyes in his arms.
When she opened them again, she was back on the night of her wedding.
Seeing the face she had known so well in her previous life, Jiang Ruyi almost wept with joy.
It wasn't too late. This time, she would treat him better and build a peaceful life with him.
Xiao Yuanye had been a bandit chief for years. Then one day, he washed his hands of that life, took on a new identity, returned to his ancestral home, and became the Pei family's third son.
The emperor arranged a marriage for him.
He knew the old emperor was worried he might return to his bandit ways. The marriage was supposedly a reward, but in truth, it was a beauty trap, with a spy planted at his side.
He saw through it but said nothing, planning to be nothing more than a husband in name.
But on their wedding night, he lifted her veil and stared blankly for a few moments into her lovely, affectionate eyes. His Adam's apple bobbed violently several times.
Damn it, the old emperor was a cunning old fox. This beauty trap was really hard to resist!
But he had iron self-control. He absolutely would not fall for it!
A little scene:
One night three years later, when they should have been asleep, the main hall was instead brightly lit, as bright as day.
Xiao Yuanye was practicing martial arts with a blade in hand, swinging the long weapon with fearsome force. A sheen of sweat covered his honey-colored skin, and the blue dragon tattoo on his chest seemed to come alive.
He caught sight of the person he had been waiting for out of the corner of his eye, and swung his blade even harder.
But Jiang Ruyi walked right past him without so much as a glance.
Xiao Yuanye nearly jumped up in a fit of exasperation!
She'd looked at that pretty little top scholar several times today. He'd gone to all this trouble to show off his blade for her, and she hadn't even looked at him. She'd better not think he was easygoing. He'd settle the score with her later...
"Xiao Yuanye."
"Yes!"
"Put away that ridiculous blade and come massage my feet."
"Coming, wifey!"
