Sorry, sweeties, I'm going to start revising the story again...
[Unorthodox criminal profiler] x [Scheming, icy Minister of the Court of Judicial Review]
Wan Qian, a brilliant detective in the police force, transmigrates into the body of a convicted official's daughter.
To clear her father's name, she hides her identity and applies for a position at the Court of Judicial Review.
The Minister of the Court, Yan Yunting, was once a spirited young general, but the machinations of power have worn him down, leaving him cold and withdrawn.
He knows how hard it is for a woman to hold office, yet he offers her a temporary position and draws Wan Qian into his game.
Her colleagues, waiting to see her make a fool of herself:
"How did she know the killer's father was a butcher?"
"What? She solved a cold case that's been open for three years?"
"Huh? The people outside came to thank her? They're even calling her a wise official who sees through everything?"
"What!? She's been made a permanent official? And the emperor personally appointed her?"
After overcoming one challenge after another, Wan Qian and Yan Yunting join forces to solve several strange cases, including copper ore smuggling and the disappearance of female workers.
While stranded in a neighboring kingdom, Wan Qian finally deduces who murdered her father.
She's about to escape when she turns around and sees that soldiers have surrounded the palace.
She thinks she's about to die there, but Yan Yunting unexpectedly carves a path through the soldiers with his blade.
The aloof beauty, once so above it all, loses his composure for her. Covered in blood, he looks like a vengeful ghost crawling out of hell.
He gently brushes the back of his finger over Wan Qian's cheek. "Qianqian, I told you, wherever you want to go, I'll go with you. Why have you never believed me?"
Heroine's perspective
Wan Qian is short on emotion, but can easily see into people's hearts.
Whether she's investigating a case or dealing with people, everything comes naturally to her. Even after transmigrating, she's still able to unravel major cases involving the struggle for imperial power and set a precedent for women serving in government.
Yet every night, a little demon appears in her dreams, repeating tirelessly, "You're a pitiful creature who doesn't even know who you are."
Who is she?
The noblewoman Li Fan, who narrowly escaped death, or Wan Qian, a 27-year-old police detective?
For a moment, she can no longer tell.
She asks everyone she knows.
The coroner who escaped her abusive father: "You're the kindest person I've ever met."
The undocumented worker struggling to survive in a foreign land: "You have compassion in your heart and righteousness in your soul."
The villain she exposed, now about to be executed: "You're utterly hypocritical, devious, and cunning."
At last, the man takes her hand as she grips her knife. "If you can't tell who you are, then be my accomplice."
Wan Qian laughs coldly. "Accomplice? When you arranged for me to fall off that cliff, you weren't this devoted."
Notes:
1. The romance between the leads develops slowly at first. The story cycles through cases and the main plot.
2. A completely fictional setting. This isn't professional writing, so please don't overanalyze it.
3. I hope you enjoy reading.
Theme: Walk alone through the night, and at last you'll see the moon. Today, I finally know who I am.
