Four years ago, Meng Qingxiang signed a ghostwriting contract with Modern Music. Still innocent and naive, he became the "behind-the-scenes songwriter" for his roommate, Dong Haoyu, and single-handedly propelled Dong Haoyu into the top ranks of folk singer-songwriters in China.
Four years later, Dong Haoyu is a household name, while Meng Qingxiang is still struggling to make ends meet and is constantly held back by Dong Haoyu. Their old friendship is gone, and Meng Qingxiang decides to go all in. He escapes to the ancient town of Fenghuang in Hunan to "gather inspiration," hoping to make a flawless album and stage the perfect comeback.
By chance, he checks into the Little White House, a guesthouse that used to be a Republican-era prison. It suits him in every way, except that on his first night there, he runs into an "uninvited guest."
"Holy crap! Who are you? How did you get in here?" Meng Qingxiang, wearing nothing but his underwear, turns pale with fright and looks at the pale, gaunt man behind him. "This place... is the guesthouse I rented!"
"Absurd," the man says coldly. "This is clearly a prison run by the Xiangxi Administration Office. How did you get in?"
Meng Qingxiang is freaking out inside: Is this a ghost?!?!
The title comes from Shuyan Gushi, Geography Section: "Too far away to reach, as if separated by a stretch of weak water."
Modern folk singer-songwriter genius Meng Qingxiang (gong) x young master of a wealthy Republican-era merchant family Xu Lingyun (shou)
Happy ending, fantasy, two timelines running in parallel, bittersweet, tragic romance
The Republican-era storyline is about the universal love and resistance of those who care about the whole world. The contemporary storyline is about the awakening and defiance of the talented but unrecognized.
