It all began the summer she transferred to No. 1 High School, where she met Jiang Xueting.
A friend asked her, "Have you heard of Jiang Xueting?"
He was the top scorer in the high school entrance exams and ranked first in his grade. The school had made him a star student from the moment he enrolled. Everyone knew who he was.
She nodded.
Her friend said, "Help me win him over, and I'll cover your tuition and living expenses for the next two years."
Jiang Xueting was notoriously hard to pursue, a lofty flower on a cliff, his whole demeanor radiating distance and indifference.
At the weekly flag-raising ceremony, he stood beneath the morning sun in his brand-new uniform, colder and lonelier than snow.
She hesitated, but two years' worth of living expenses was too tempting. She'd give it a try.
She delivered love letters for her friend, played wingwoman, and set off confetti at the birthday party. She was diligent and dedicated to the job.
Her living expenses for high school were taken care of. She no longer had to live under someone else's roof, and could focus on her college entrance exams and get into a university she liked.
At the celebration after the exams, she happily set off fireworks for her friend.
Confetti burst into the air, drifting over everyone's heads.
Only Jiang Xueting took the confetti down. He didn't throw it away. He held it in his hand and gently rolled it between his fingers again and again.
Across the crowd, his indifferent eyes stared straight at her.
Just like two years ago, when she first delivered a love letter to him for her friend. He'd been sitting on the study's sofa, looking up at her with that same gaze.
His dark, indifferent eyes had faintly reflected the lamplight.
He asked:
"Lin Luosheng."
"Was it fun, playing me?"
