Beautiful Jade

"I have a bright pearl, long locked away by the dust and toil of this world.

Now the dust is gone and its light shines forth, illuminating ten thousand peaks and rivers."

A Verse Presented to Chan Master Yuan

Shaoyu was a clever and bold young woman.

Most men in the world were womanizers, taking multiple wives and concubines. So after she was sent to Joyful Nunnery, Shaoyu decided that spending the rest of her life as a little nun there wouldn't be so bad. After all, if she could serve the empress dowager, who had practiced at the nunnery for over a decade, she would never have to worry about food or clothing.

Unfortunately, even becoming a little nun wasn't easy these days. The nuns in charge disliked her dubious origins and were at odds with her at every turn, intent on driving her down the mountain.

Shaoyu grew desperate.

With nowhere else to turn, she set her sights on Lian Ji, who had arrived at the nunnery not long before.

This young nobleman from Yuliang, the capital, was not only handsome and refined, but also upright and kind. He looked easy to win over, er, like a perfect friend.

Shaoyu thought, If we become friends, he'd probably be willing to put in a good word for me with the nuns, wouldn't he?

Back then, she never imagined that this immaculate young man, whom she had jokingly coaxed into promising, "I'll protect you," would truly spend his whole life doing everything in his power to protect her.
