Shunqin is a lovely name, her mother's friend once said.

Years later, as Shunqin reads The Story of Shunkin, she thinks: Wouldn't it be wonderful if I were blind? Even if I were ugly, at least I might earn other people's affection that way.

But Shunqin isn't blind, and no one loves her for it. Her classmates say she's just a plain girl in nerdy glasses.

Suffering because she isn't loved, Shunqin ends her life amid pain and confusion, making a wish before she dies.
