Many years later, in a dream, Huo Lian'en knelt before the Bodhisattva and asked, "Why is the bond between me and the person who died for me in my previous life growing more distant in this one?"
The Bodhisattva answered, "The person you thought died for you in your previous life did not truly die for you. Life and death are decreed by fate. His time had simply come."
Huo Lian'en asked again, "Why, in this life, am I becoming more and more entangled with the person who had nothing to do with me in my previous life, and who treats me so cruelly?"
The Bodhisattva replied, "That is why you are able to kneel here and ask me."
Huo Lian'en turned around and saw Huo Lianjin kneeling in the temple, holding his still-warm body after his accidental death in their previous life, and begging the Bodhisattva: if the person in his arms could live, he would dedicate the rest of his own life to the Bodhisattva.
