In the interstellar era, the chance of a child getting lost is 0.001 per mille.
The chance of getting lost while traveling alone on a starship under close staff supervision is 0.0005 per mille.
The chance of getting lost with a family-prepared chip implanted is 0.0001 per mille.
Yue Qingming was the unlucky kid who managed to hit every one of those odds.
At five years old, Yue Qingming traveled alone by starship to visit his grandparents. Space pirates attacked along the way, and in the ensuing chaos, someone took advantage of the confusion to abduct him. But that was all right: Yue Qingming's photographic memory and the chip behind his ear could help him find his way home.
Ancient Earth had a saying: Misfortunes never come singly.
The ship that had taken Yue Qingming exploded in space. Drawing on the knowledge stored in his chip and his photographic memory, Yue Qingming found an escape pod. Unfortunately, the tremendous force of the explosion damaged the part of his chip containing information about his family. The shock also awakened his psychic powers, while wiping out most of his memories.
He couldn't find his way home.
Then, six months before I came of age, the chip's communicator sprang back to life: Your family has been found.
I flicked the blood off my knife and used one hand to look up my family's information on my wrist computer: my parents were shining stars of the military; my grandfather was a military general; my grandmother was a political heavyweight; my paternal grandparents were major taxpayers and philanthropists; my uncle and cousin were geniuses at the Academy of Sciences; my biological brother was the top student in his second year at the number-one military academy. Even my young uncle, who had been adopted by my grandparents, had already become a major general.
So compared to my family, who all served the Federation, I was a murderer and arsonist with my own private mines who also manufactured and sold weapons. I was even more "beyond redemption" than those cowardly true heirs in web novels, wasn't I?!
But my uncle still brought me home, even after seeing all of that.
I thought that once I got home, I would be met with suspicious looks, insults, secrecy, or abandonment.
I never expected that my grandparents and parents would want to use all their past achievements to protect me; that my paternal grandparents would give me a fortune to spend as I pleased; that my uncle and cousin would do everything they could to treat my frail body; that my brother would beat up anyone at the military academy who spoke ill of me; or that my uncle would stand by my side before I could lash out at someone for no apparent reason, at least as far as outsiders could tell.
It's nice to have a family. Too bad I'm not really one of them.
