Gu Shuning is an orphan adopted by a collateral branch of the Gu family. Through a twist of fate, she is brought to the main household to be raised.
She first meets Gu Hui on the balcony of the Gu family home.
The young man gives her a cold look, as if blaming her for coming here without permission.
"This isn't a place you should be."
She calmly meets his gaze and smiles sweetly. "I'm sorry, big brother. I just arrived, so I didn't know."
She's always been good at sweet talk, following him around and calling him "big brother" nonstop.
Gu Hui sees right through her. He always lets her call him that with his eyes half-lowered, his gaze cold to the depths.
Later, those eyes, so utterly cold, watch her countless times in the night.

Years later, they meet again in a torrential downpour. Gu Hui watches her in the rain, then strolls over to her with an umbrella.
"Why did you come back?" he asks without emotion.
She remains silent.
Gu Hui holds the umbrella steady, its shadow completely enveloping her. He bends down and reaches out to caress the side of her face, his eyes lowered.
"Shuning, this time, you won't get away so easily."
