The two most famous kids in Xinghua Alley were these boys.

One was Geng Xing, who lived at No. 17 Xinghua Alley. Two persimmon trees grew by his front door, and every autumn, when the persimmons ripened, everyone who passed his house got some from little Geng Xing.

The other was Lin Mo, nicknamed Lin the Mute. He lived at No. 07 Tianyuan Road with only his alcoholic father and elderly grandmother. He was always dressed like a homeless person, squatting on the street and begging people for food.

Geng Xing had never seen Lin Mo before starting elementary school, but he had heard his name.

Whenever the adults talked about Lin Mo, they always sighed and clicked their tongues to show how sorry they felt for him.

With every sigh and click of the tongue, Geng Xing's curiosity about Lin Mo gradually took root and grew.

During winter vacation in first grade, Geng Xing was patrolling his territory with his golden cudgel, leading his "monkey underlings" around the streets as usual, when a kid suddenly appeared and stole his roasted sweet potato.

Geng Xing immediately shouted and pressed the golden cudgel to the thief's neck, his face red as he marched him home.

The little thief was filthy, wearing clothes full of holes in the middle of winter, his hands and feet covered in chilblains as he wolfed down the piping-hot roasted sweet potato.

Geng Xing learned from one of his underlings that this was Lin Mo.

The boy who was always the subject of sighs and tongue-clicking.

Geng Xing was stunned.

Many years later, someone asked Lin Mo what his favorite season was.

He was silent for a moment, then said, "Winter."
