I saw a woman fall.
No one screamed.
The passengers on the platform kept looking down at their messages. The train pulled in as usual, and even the surveillance footage showed nothing. As the body fell past an advertising billboard, it seemed I was the only person in the entire station who saw her.
Twenty-seven minutes later, the System finished restoring the footage.
The woman in the video had my face.
Half an hour later, a second surveillance clip was uploaded.
In it, I stood behind her and pushed her off the platform with my own hands.
And so I became a murder suspect.
My name is Li Fei. I'm a real-scene calibration specialist.
In this city, the public visual System overlays people's appearances, streets, and buildings with its own versions. People have long since grown used to trusting the System and everything it shows them.
I have a left eye that cannot connect to the network. It can't see the illusions created by the System, which means I can always spot things that shouldn't exist.
To find out who had stolen my face, I went to an underground repair shop.
The owner, Vincent, loves money and has a sharp tongue. He specializes in repairing devices that the Identity Center explicitly forbids anyone to repair. After inspecting the chip I brought him, he immediately demanded extra payment.
Vincent: "There are twelve identities on here."
I asked, "What about the thirteenth?"
He turned the screen toward me. "That's you."
