Jiang Mi lived with her birth mother, Jiang Qiuyue, for eighteen whole years. All that time, the mother and daughter, who depended on each other, never got along very well.
Jiang Qiuyue was impulsive and hot-tempered. She acted without considering the consequences, always leaving Jiang Mi to clean up the mess.
When Jiang Mi learned that her birth mother had repeatedly used her status as an illegitimate daughter to demand money from the Yan family, ruining the powerful Yan family's arranged marriages time and again, she liked her even less.
But then Jiang Qiuyue died in a highway pileup.
After her death, Jiang Mi discovered that her mother had left her a clean, bright apartment in the city where she wanted to attend college. Climbing roses covered the walls, and Jiang Qiuyue had saved up a full million yuan for her. She had also left behind a note written in handwriting like chicken scratches.
"I wasn't a good mother, but I love you."
Eager to leave home that September, Jiang Mi turned around, only to realize that she would never have a home again.
But when Jiang Mi opened her eyes again, it was the first snowfall of 2002.
Her mother, Jiang Qiuyue, was still in high school in Zhenhai. She was a notorious delinquent and one of the toughest girls around, with terrible grades. She hadn't yet had her whirlwind romance with the Yan family's young master. She never bothered dressing up, either, spending all day with her sworn sisterhood of fellow underachievers, eating junk food from street stalls and getting into fights with thugs from the neighboring school whenever they annoyed her.
Jiang Mi, who had been consumed by a mix of gratitude and guilt, couldn't wait to see her mother again. But as soon as she arrived in this world, she found her mother in the middle of a brawl.
There was no time for a single tender word. She had to step in and break up the fight.
At last, she managed to put an end to a pointless brawl.
But Jiang Qiuyue was furious that she had interfered, accusing her good-student daughter of sticking her nose where it didn't belong.
She snapped, "What's it to you? What idiot gave birth to a thing like you?"
There was no way Jiang Mi could keep trying to soften this idiot up with tenderness, so she decided to stay by Jiang Qiuyue's side every day, to stop her from doing anything too outrageous.
But gradually, she realized that aside from her foul temper and awful personality... Jiang Qiuyue was actually an honest person with a conscience.
The person Jiang Mi needed to watch out for most became Yan Shang, the man who got Jiang Qiuyue pregnant and left her to raise the child alone. Jiang Mi had always believed he was the beginning of her mother's tragic life.
Yet Yan Shang, proud and arrogant as he was, often gazed at her mother with helpless longing.
Compared to the composed, seasoned man he would become twenty years later, he was now still fairly handsome, with the restless energy of youth.
Jiang Mi worried about it for a long time.
Her mother, who knew nothing about romance and was going through a serious case of teenage angst, said, "Hah, men. My handsomeness deserves your admiration; my coolness leaves you nowhere to hide."
Jiang Mi: "..."
