Neither This Nor That

Nuwa dipped a vine into mud and flung it in all directions, creating the men and women of the world.

Everyone was born different. Humanity was divided into five castes, with commoners and slaves collectively known as the Ignorant, the lowest and most debased caste. They could only do society's hardest, most exhausting work, and were strictly forbidden from encountering anything related to "wisdom."

Yu An was one of the Ignorant, born into this religiously zealous world, yet she was almost an atheist, for she held another faith in her heart.

Her beliefs came from fragments of dreams frozen in time. In them lay a fantastical world she had never seen and could not imagine, yet she believed with absolute certainty that it existed.

But the human world was far from peaceful. Famine, war, and plague ravaged the land. The Ignorant no longer had any value, and only the "higher people," with their magic and resources, could survive.

What no one knew was that this upheaval in human civilization was not aimed only at those they considered "inferior." It would destroy everyone without distinction.

"If humanity is destined to perish, will Nuwa regret creating us?"
