After transmigrating, Xu Beiyan became an orphaned girl living in the countryside. Her days were quiet and uneventful. Although she was a little sad, she gradually got used to life in ancient times.
One day, a young gentleman moved into the courtyard next door. He was handsome and elegantly dressed, but for some reason he was all alone, with no servants around.
Xu Beiyan knew they belonged to different worlds. She didn't want to get involved with the powerful, so she carefully avoided him every day. But one day, the house next door caught fire, forcing them to shelter under the same roof. That was when Xu Beiyan learned his name: Gu Wangshu, taken from the line, "Wangshu goes ahead to lead the way, while Feilian follows behind."
Though she lived in the countryside, she had heard of Gu Wangshu. Eighteen years ago, the wife of the Marquis of Dingbei gave birth to a legitimate son at a temple and named him Gu Wangshu. Born a noble heir, he had always been arrogant and overbearing. But half a month ago, rumors spread that the marquis's wife had accidentally switched him at birth with a village woman's child. And so Gu Wangshu, once high above everyone else, suddenly became someone people avoided like the plague.
During the month he fell from grace, Gu Wangshu lived under the same roof as Xu Beiyan. At first, he despised her for being foolishly kind, but in time he found himself drawn to her. Everyone thought he had fallen into the dust, but none knew it was all part of the Prince's household's plan to turn the tables. As affection grew with time, he decided to marry Xu Beiyan. He thought her lowly status didn't matter: even if her identity were restored in the future, she could be his favored concubine, and with his love, no one would dare bully her.
The day Gu Wangshu regained his identity, Xu Beiyan stood dazed for a long time. In a fog, she returned home, her eyes red as she looked at him and asked, "Will I still be your wife after this?"
After a long silence, Gu Wangshu promised again and again that he would never wrong her or let anyone bully her. It was just that... he would have another wife.
Xu Beiyan's eyes reddened. She shook her head and said, "My lord, I am lowborn and know only one saying: 'Better a poor man's wife than a marquis's concubine.' I will never be anyone's concubine in this life. Please let me go."
She begged him to let her go, but Gu Wangshu refused to release her. She tried to escape many times, but he used every means at his disposal to keep her. She was his Beiyan, and he would never let her go.
He couldn't understand. When he had nothing, she had given him her whole heart. Why, now that he had wealth and power, was she so determined to leave him?
On the day he was officially to take Xu Beiyan as his concubine, Gu Wangshu was overjoyed. He had prepared many precious jewels and an eight-bearer bridal sedan to fetch his Beiyan. Instead, he received news that Xu Beiyan had accidentally fallen into the water and her body had never been found. In a daze, he went home, fell seriously ill with a high fever, and after recovering, forcibly severed ties with the Prince's household.
A year later, he had become a powerful regional governor. One day, while traveling south to Chuzhou, he suddenly spotted a familiar figure on the main street. His eyes bloodshot, he watched his Beiyan walking beside a scholar. He heard that the two were already discussing marriage. He sneered for a long time, trembling with rage.
That day, when Xu Beiyan returned home, someone seized her by the chin and kissed her. The taste of blood spread between their lips and teeth as love and hatred swallowed them both. Only after a long while did she finally see the man's face. Gu Wangshu stared at her with bloodshot eyes and said, "Xu Beiyan, you want to marry someone? Dream on..."
Even if it cost him everything, he would keep this wild goose trapped in his arms.
Born free, Beiyan would never escape the waters of Gu Wangshu's heart.
