Meeting in Summer

Ten years after high school graduation, I signed up for a class reunion in a T-shirt and flip-flops, shamelessly hoping to get a custom gold class emblem as a party favor from a rich classmate. Then, in a moment of carelessness, I slept with the person I'd secretly loved in high school.

Five months later, I was sitting by a bridge in sunglasses, rolling prayer beads and telling fortunes. A very tall, very pale man approached from afar. His eyes were clear as spring water, and his demeanor as steady as a quiet mountain. When he looked at me, his eyes held both gritted-teeth hatred and helplessness.

Dazed by the sun, I blurted out, "Hey, handsome, want your fortune told?"

His thin lips parted, and he smiled in a chilling way.

"Miss, could you tell me who the father of the child you're carrying is?"

Plop.

I went pale, and the prayer beads fell from my hand to the ground.
