Overhauling the Male Supporting Character's Fate in a Period Novel

Zhao Xiang transmigrates into a novel set in the 1970s and becomes the second son in a large family, disliked by everyone. Favoritist grandparents, bad-tempered parents, lazy older brother and sister-in-law, a sharp-tongued younger sister, a mean-spirited younger brother, and... the original owner, who works tirelessly, endures hardship, slaves away, and is honest and dull-witted. Zhao Xiang has just transmigrated when his family decides to give him to an old man whose son has died, so the old man can have a grandson. According to the original plot, the original owner can't bear to leave his family and begs and cries to stay. In the end, he works himself to death and earns a reputation as a selfish, heartless wretch despised by his entire family. But Zhao Xiang promptly throws down his bundle and leaves without a second thought. He knows this isn't giving him away at all. They're simply sending him off to live the good life. Not only will he have enough to eat and warm clothes to wear, but he'll also have grandparents who love him and a father who died heroically, leaving behind a pension. When things are busy, he works in the fields and serves his elders. In his spare time, he goes into the mountains to hunt game and into the river to catch fish. Zhao Xiang's life couldn't be more comfortable. Just as he's debating whether to study for the university entrance exams or take advantage of the times and go into business, an unexpected person appears at his door. Staring at the face, nine-tenths identical to the memorial portrait hanging on the wall, he rubs his eyes and lets out a scream: "Grandpa! Grandma! My dad's ghost is back!" The villagers all say Zhao Xiang is lucky. After being given away, he doesn't have to go hungry, suffer the cold, or get beaten and scolded. What's more, he now has a military officer for a living father. Before, he could just fill his stomach. Now he can eat meat. Before, he was a poor boy. Now he's the son of a cadre, and he even has the chance to join his father in the army. Everyone else can only envy him, while the Zhao family regrets it so much their guts turn green. They fret and fidget, desperate to reconnect with the son they gave away and "rekindle their family ties." Looking at this family, who would love nothing more than to cling to him and suck him dry, Zhao Xiang sneers inwardly. But on the surface, he asks his father with an innocent look, "Dad, they say I'm part of the Zhao family and want to bring me back to acknowledge my roots. Will you agree?"
