After Shen Niannian transmigrates into a book, she first loses her parents, then her Dao companion. At her most desperate moment, she gets bound to a baffling Survival System.
That would be bad enough, but the System is unreliable and keeps assigning her all sorts of strange tasks.
Through a series of mishaps, she saves a mortal named Shi Yue at the foot of a mountain, a man who looks a lot like her "late husband."
Once she saves him, she ends up saving him again and again. The mortal is always following her around and holding her back.
So when they run into little ghosts, she steps up. When they encounter demon beasts, she steps up. When a great demon spits ice shards at them, she shields him.
She protects the mortal so thoroughly that she never notices the man she's risking her life to defend is always trying to kill her behind her back.
One day, Shen Niannian suddenly discovers that the gravestone she personally erected over her late husband's grave has been blown up!
Shen Niannian: !!!
Where's my gravestone? Where's that huge gravestone of mine? Who would do something so awful? Can you eat a gravestone after blowing it up?
The culprit, Shi Yue: ...
Later, Shen Niannian finally clears up the misunderstanding with her late husband, who turned into a ghost and kept trying to come back to kill her, and successfully gains a Ghost King husband.
But the good times don't last. Before Shen Niannian can stay up all night talking with her Dao companion, reunited after their long separation, she suddenly gets a notification from the System: the plot has gone off the rails!
System: Host, this is bad! The original male lead is going to cut out the female lead's heart!
Shen Niannian: Help! I haven't done anything, so why have both leads gone off the rails?
Shen Niannian thinks it over and realizes something is off about the System's identity. The world is about to collapse because the plot's gone so far off the rails, so why aren't you worried at all, System?
In another space, the fake System averts its eyes uneasily: I was too busy getting hooked on the original leads' drama! I didn't expect them to go so out of character!
In a nutshell: The heroine is crazy one moment and eccentric the next, and it's a blast all the way through.
Also known as: My Late Husband Has an Unusual Identity; My Dao Companion Isn't Human After All; I'm Not Bragging, I'm Seriously Amazing at Artifact Refining! Why Do I Feel Like My Husband Has Become a Yandere? My Husband Turned Into a Ghost and Keeps Trying to Come Back to Harm Me!
A few things to know:
1. There is a System, but it has very little presence, and it has a secret identity.
2. The heroine is both timid and immensely satisfying to watch. Everything serves the plot, and there are lots of original worldbuilding details. If that's not your thing, please drop the book.
3. The heroine's growth and career are the main storyline, with the romance between the leads as a secondary storyline.
A seemingly foolish but actually wise heroine vs. a conflicted, gentle hero who truly loves her and speaks his mind, plus a fake System that loves gossip.
Reason for entering the "I Was Born to Be Useful" writing contest: The heroine spends over a hundred years practicing swordsmanship during the Qi Refining stage without reaching Foundation Establishment. She later studies many paths of cultivation and finally finds a way of cultivating that suits her. She discovers her talent for artifact refining, levels up and battles enemies all the way from the Qi Refining stage, fights the villains and saves the people, realizes her life's worth, and achieves extraordinary success.
Theme: Love the Party, the country, the people, and science. May the world be at peace, may every home shine with lamplight, and may warmth endure among us all.
