During the summer break before her sophomore year of college ends, Chu Shuang finishes her last exam and rushes around looking for tutoring work.
At dusk, while complaining to a little black cat by the school gate about an unreasonable parent, she suddenly hears a man's voice beneath the dim streetlight nearby:
"Would you be willing to try tutoring my younger sister?"
Chu Shuang looks up and sees a tall man in a black tank top, with a close-cropped haircut and a cigarette between his fingers.
Isn't he the owner of the delivery station next door?
Chu Shuang watches the kitten, which had been happily letting her pet it, run over to the man and rub against his pant leg. She can't remember what she was thinking at the time. She only remembers giving a dazed little nod.
From the male lead's perspective:
Shen Yingzhou has been busy at the delivery station all day. At dusk, when he sneaks out for a cigarette without his younger sister noticing, he is forced to "overhear" every word a girl says to his little black cat.
The streetlight beside the delivery station is old and broken, giving off only a faint glow.
Shen Yingzhou can't make out the girl's face. All he can see is the outline of her crouching figure against the sunset.
He can't say what prompted him, but Shen Yingzhou says those words.
Every time the sunset later lights up that silhouette, Shen Yingzhou is profoundly grateful to his past self.
